BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — The Southeastern Conference will stick to an eight-game league schedule for at least two more seasons.
The league announced Wednesday that each team will play eight SEC opponents in 2025 and one regulation game against a team from the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 or “major independent team.” .
The SEC previously decided to use an eight-game format this season, expanding the league to 16 teams with the addition of Oklahoma and Texas. In both seasons, teams will play opponents from the same league.
“We continue to monitor changes across college sports related to future schedules,” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said in a statement. “Continuing with the current format for the 2025 season will give us additional time to understand the impact of the changes happening around us as we determine the appropriate long-term plan for the SEC football schedule. SEC leaders were considering a nine-game conference schedule with three games per year and an eight-game model with one game per year.
The league has already resolved its divisions, and the top two teams in the standings will face off in the SEC Championship Game.
The SEC president and board of directors approved the schedule format last week after receiving recommendations from athletic directors.
The complete schedule for 2025 has not yet been announced.
