After a somewhat disappointing 7-6 season, Luke Fickell and the Badgers will look to bounce back this year. This spring, the portal has been seeing a lot of player departures and additions. So, how do you rate the team's work so far?
The Badgers lost seven players to the portal this spring, but fortunately there were no major contributors in 2023. The biggest name, quarterback Nick Evers, was nearly in contention for the third string spot behind Tyler Van Dyke and Bradyn Lock. Outside linebacker TJ Bollers also entered his name in the portal, but Wisconsin brought so much talent to Edge this winter that he was likely destined for another year on special teams. The Badgers lost a few other reserves, but they don't have much to worry about. Overall, Fickell and company have done a great job of retaining players. Class A-
Wisconsin has added three transfer players to the spring portal so far. Vanderbilt's Leighton Nelson and Illinois' Joey Okura are both good additions to the offensive line, and each player still has several years of eligibility left. The newest commitment, Boston College receiver Joseph Griffin Jr., is a great acquisition for the Badgers and has a real chance of starting on the outside alongside Bryson Green. Wisconsin still needs help on the defensive line, and making a solid transfer there could greatly improve this score. Grade: B-
Overall, the Badgers did a solid job in the portal this spring. They haven't lost any significant elite talent, but so far they haven't set the world on fire with any new transfers. If Fickell can add key players to the defensive line, he could easily move up to the A grade this offseason. But for now, grade: B/B+
