“I will never stop running in memory of my mother.”
Among us “why i'm running” series, Boston Marathon runners talk about what motivates them to make the 42.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston. If you're running a marathon, you can share your story here.
Name: Sarah Burke
Age: 24 years old

I am running the 2024 Boston Marathon this year in memory of my mother, Evan Burke. I am honored to be part of the Ellie Foundation, a breast cancer organization dedicated to providing support to those battling breast cancer. In addition to providing assistance with transportation, prepared meals, and gift cards to local stores, the Ellie Fund provides peace of mind for the entire family.
The Ellie Foundation helped my family as my mother was fighting for her life. Although she fought hard, our best friend was taken from her on Mother's Day weekend in 2012. She was our everything. When our mother died at the young age of 44, I was only 12 and her sister Elizabeth was 13.
It means so much to raise money for an organization that once helped my family. We are happy to help raise funds to support families in need. I know that heartbreak. I truly believe that the Erie Foundation is as great as it is today because of the people who work there. There is one passion that we all have. It's about supporting people fighting breast cancer. I will never stop running in memory of my mother.
