Delhi Capitals managed to survive a thrilling match against Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday, with opposition captain Sanju Samson threatening to single-handedly end the onslaught. In the end, they registered a 20-run victory and kept their playoff hopes alive in IPL 2024, but Rajasthan suffered two consecutive losses. Despite winning a tough match, Samson's game-changing dismissal under controversial circumstances hogged all the attention.
Chasing 222 for victory in Delhi, Samson was the only warrior for Rajasthan Royals. After Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed on the second ball of the innings, he arrived himself at the early crease and started an aggressive knock-in style as he ran for 40 in the powerplay.
The Rajasthan Royals wicketkeeper didn't have much support from the top order, with batsmen around him making cameo appearances. However, Samson continued to fight and hit 50 on his way to 100 years old. But his eyes were always on victory. His efforts ensured that Rajasthan qualified for the playoffs by 63 runs, hitting the slot ball straight to long-off with five overs in hand.
It looked like Samson was on his way to another six, but Shai Hope, who was stationed deep, made a perfect call for an overhead catch, but was careful to make sure his feet didn't touch the boundary rope. I had to. Although the initial view of the dismissal was that he was standing so close to the rope at the time of the catch that his foot may have touched it, DC's players jubilantly began celebrating the dismissal.
RR is unhappy with the call
The decision was immediately left to the television referee, who, after examining the catch from several, but not all, angles, concluded it was a clean catch. But Samson didn't seem satisfied with his dismissal. He lunged at the umpire and got into a heated argument with match officials as Rajasthan Royals Director of Cricket and Head Coach Kumar Sangakkara and the rest of the dugout erupted into chaos. Shocked by the dismissal, everyone stood up to carefully watch the replay again, but Samson helplessly returned to the pavilion. Meanwhile, DC co-owner Parth Jindal continued to shout in the stands that he was out and lost his cool.
Samson was fired after 86 losses for 46 at-bats. There was still hope for RR as Rovman Powell was sent off as the last batsman for the visiting team, but they were unable to make much of a difference as the team lost by 20 runs.
