Ron Slaymaker is back in action as a high school basketball coach.
After serving as Olpe's girls basketball coach for three years, Sleymaker has been hired as Topeka High School's next girls basketball coach, according to TopSports.News. Slaymaker's employment is pending approval by the school board in the amount of $501. Sleymaker replaces longtime coach Jesse Nelson, who retired after 44 years in 2021 and led Olpe to two Class 1A Division I state championship appearances in 2023 and 2024. Prior to her arrival with Olpe, Slaymaker served as the girls basketball coach at Chase County for seven seasons. . Sleymaker led the Bulldogs to state tournament appearances in Class 2A in 2015 and 2017. Slaymaker was the head men's basketball coach at Emporia State University from 1970 to 1998, where she compiled a record of 462-365.
Slaymaker replaces Brittany Redmond, who was waived midway through last season due to unknown circumstances. Slaymaker will be Topeka High School's third girls basketball coach in the last three seasons. The Lady Trojans finished the 2023-24 season with a record of 5 wins and 15 losses. Emporia High School will play Topeka High School on February 7, 2025 in Topeka and on February 21, 2025 in Emporia.
