What is the Preakness Stakes?
The Preakness Stakes is an annual horse race that is the center jewel of the Triple Crown. Since 1931, this race is usually held on the third Saturday in May, two weeks after the Kentucky Derby. Outdoor events are held rain or shine.
This year marks the 149th time the Preakness has been held. It has never operated on Sundays. However, it is performed 14 times on Tuesdays, 13 times on Fridays, six times on Mondays, five times on Wednesdays, and four times on Thursdays.
In 2020, the Preakness was postponed to October, the most recent in its history dating back to 1873, and the last Triple Crown race to be held due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Where are the Preakness Stakes located?
The Preakness is held annually at Pimlico Race Course, also known as “Old Hilltop,” in northwest Baltimore. General Information Line: 410-542-9400.
In March, an agreement was reached to transfer ownership of Pimlico from the Stronach Group to the state. In the 2024 session, the General Assembly agreed to a revised version of the bill to redevelop Pimlico and surrounding areas.

Who will be performing on Preakness LIVE?
Hip-hop artist Jack Harlow will headline the post-race performance lineup for Infield Entertainment's latest edition of Preakness Live. Harlow was named “Top New Artist” at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards and is known for his hit songs “Lovin' on Me,” “First Class,” and “What's Poppin'.”

How do I get to the Preakness?
Directions to Pimlico Racecourse:
From Interstate 95 North (Washington, DC), take the Baltimore Loop (Interstate 695) toward Towson, then take exit 18A onto Liberty Road toward Lochern. Turn left onto Northern Parkway. Turn left onto North Rogers Avenue, then right onto Park Heights Avenue.
From Interstate 95 South (New York/Philadelphia/New Jersey/Delaware), take the Baltimore Loop (Interstate 695) toward Towson, then take Interstate 83 south toward Baltimore. Take the Northern Parkway west exit, turn left onto West Belvedere Avenue, turn right onto Park Heights Avenue and follow the parking signs.
From the inner harbortake I-83 north to Northern Parkway West and follow signs to the parking lot.
From Frederick and West Point, take Interstate 70 east, take the Baltimore Loop (Interstate 695) toward Towson\New York, and take exit 18A onto Liberty Road toward Lochern. Turn left onto Northern Parkway. Turn left onto North Rogers Avenue, then right onto Park Heights Avenue.
Patrons coming to Maryland by air can fly into Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, approximately 25 miles away.

Where is parking at the Preakness?
All parking lots are accessible and parking can be paid in advance online here.
The closest accessible parking is the VIP Hayward car park, located 25 meters from the grandstand entrance.
The Pimlico Road infield entrance is accessible, but the ground is not level when crossing the track. The best entrance for disabled users parking in Preakness Way Lot 4 is the Rogers Gate entrance on Rogers Avenue.
There is no shuttle service from each parking lot to the facility.
Which roads are closed in the Preakness?
The Baltimore City Department of Transportation will announce road closures, detours and parking restrictions for the 2024 Preakness closer to the event time.
What can’t you bring to the Preakness?

– Smoking and vaping are prohibited in all indoor and seating sections. Please use the designated smoking area.

– No cooler. Patrons are not permitted to bring food or drink from outside into Pimlico. If you have medication that needs to be kept refrigerated, please visit the First Aid Station located on the first floor of the Grandstand.
All persons entering Pimlico, and their camera bags, wallets and containers, will be subject to a direct physical search or indirect search using a walker or magnetometer.
What does the Preakness winner get?
In addition to a $1.5 million prize, the Preakness winner will receive a replica of the Woodlawn Vase, recognized as the most valuable trophy in American sports. This replica is worth his $30,000 and will be awarded to the winner. This timeless silver vase is on display at the Baltimore Museum of Art and was taken under guard to Pimlico for racing. In 1983, this vase was valued at his $1 million. Originally created by Tiffany in 1860.
The richest Preakness Stakes prize to date was $1.65 million in 2022.
