On Thursday afternoon, the city approved rezoning for a new soccer stadium and received feedback from the community.
GRAND RAPIDS, MI — A rezoning for a proposed downtown soccer stadium was approved by the City of Grand Rapids in a unanimous vote at Thursday's meeting. The proposed 8,500-seat soccer stadium would be built downtown near the YMCA.
Organizers and the community expressed concerns about several different elements discussed at the meeting.
These include heavy traffic, noise impact on neighboring properties, parking accessibility, and affordability of tickets and concessions.
Over the past several months, feedback sessions and surveys have been conducted by Grand Action 2.0 and MDOT.
Kennedy Fitzgerald, executive director of the West Grand Neighborhood Organization's board of directors, said businesses should be listed for use of the stadium.
“Subsidy efforts should seek cooperation from companies with large sites that are not in use during events to reduce the parking burden for stadium event participants, including sites that are connected to the use of dash buses. In general, the City of Grand Rapids needs to revise its parking strategy. “Parking availability is never guaranteed and access to public transportation is limited. At this time, large-scale actions are We have said we will not pursue direct investment in public transit,” Fitzgerald said.
Once the project is complete, the city could see an economic impact of more than $400 million.
Construction of the soccer stadium is expected to create 330 jobs. Next, the developer must go through a permitting process before construction can begin.
