The soccer season began over the weekend with some interesting class competition as 3A Worland took on 4A Sheridan in girls and boys games. Worland is a three-time 3A boys state champion and ranked No. 1 in the preseason in the WyoPreps poll. The Warriors lost the season opener against Sheridan, 1-0, after the Bronx scored a go-ahead goal with 16:30 remaining. It was the first loss for the Worland boys in over five years, but they bounced back on Saturday to defeat #2 Cody 1-0. Sheridan ranked him fifth in the WyoPreps 4A preseason poll, third in last year's state tournament and second in 2022. The Broncs won his 4-2 over Buffalo over the weekend to improve to a 2-2 record.
On the girls side, Sheridan scored three goals in the second half to defeat Worland 4-0. Sheridan has qualified for the 4A state tournament the past three years, and Worland reached the 3A state championship last season, losing 4-0 to Cody in the final. Sheridan ended the weekend with a 12-1 win over Buffalo, and Worland's girls team, ranked No. 2 in the preseason poll, lost to No. 1 Cody in a 2-0 decision. Sheridan and Worland will definitely be factors in their respective classifications this season.
