A traditional Turkey Day dish will be prepared in Northeast Philadelphia.
Earlier this week, Father Judge High School, a Catholic school on Solley Avenue in the city's Holmesburg neighborhood, announced it would not play its Thanksgiving football game against Abraham Lincoln High School, a public school in the neighboring Mayfair neighborhood. did.
Why are high school competitions canceled?
“After more than 40 years, Father Judge High School and Abraham Lincoln High School have reached a joint agreement to cancel the annual Thanksgiving game, a long-standing tradition in Northeast Philadelphia.” Judge Alumni Association President Brian Patrick King wrote in the article. A letter to the Catholic school community posted on the judge's Facebook page.
King wrote that “this decision was not made lightly” and had been under consideration by the school for several years.
“The safety and security of players, referees, and spectators, as well as the potential for conflicts with the PIAA and District 12 schedules and football, were some of the driving forces that led to this decision,” King wrote.
The Judge Alumni Association's letter said a second reason for the “difficult decision” to end the Thanksgiving tradition was to provide some respite for students who also participate in winter sports.
It wasn't clear what would happen next for each school's football program.
