Oklahoma State has added another transfer portal.
Recently hired OSU coach Steve Lutz's first team in Stillwater is starting to take shape with new commitments. On Sunday, UCF transfer Marcellus Avery announced on social media that he is transferring to OSU.
After coaching for three seasons at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Western Kentucky, Lutz comes to OSU after a long coaching search. After OSU's 12-20 season, he has already added several talented players to his starting roster.
Avery committed to OSU after one season at UCF, helping the Knights to a 17-16 record and a trip to the NIT in his first Big 12 season. Avery started two of 31 games last season and provided significant playing time for the Knights.
He averaged 7.6 points and 4 rebounds in 17.7 minutes per game. Avery had several scoring outbursts before reaching this average.
His best scoring performance last season came in the Knights' win over South Dakota State in mid-November, when he scored 22 points on 7-of-16 shooting in 30 minutes. This matchup was one of 11 games in which Avery scored in double figures, including four games against Big 12 opponents.
With one season of experience already under his belt in the Big 12, Avery navigated a grueling 18-game conference schedule and came to OSU knowing what it takes to be successful. Before joining UCF last season, Avery had success at several smaller schools.
Avery began his collegiate career at Northwest Florida State University before spending two seasons at New Mexico State University. He started nine games over two seasons there before the program was suspended for the 2022-23 season.
As OSU continues to build its roster for next season, additions like Avery could provide optimism as the team enters a new era.
