Jackson's nonprofit organization offers free swim lessons through its annual summer swim program. Lessons are provided by 100 black men from Jackson. Organizers say the program has been running for more than 30 years. The program's swim coordinator said he was inspired to create the program after four children died in a water accident during a family gathering in Louisiana. “Having this facility really inspired us to teach kids how to swim,” said Barnett Taylor, a member of Jackson's 100 Black Men and swim coordinator. Ta. Taylor said the swim program was a success for some participants. Jim Hill High School senior Arian Taylor has signed with Meridian Community College on a swimming scholarship, becoming the first Jackson Public Schools student-athlete to do so, Taylor said. Taylor said the high school senior learned how to swim in the 100 Black Male Swimming Program. Taylor said the program is open to anyone. This program is aimed at students from the age of 8 to the age of 18. To register, call 601-366-8301 or email projectdirector@100bmoj.org.
