Day 1 final heat sheet
Five swimmers, including Olympic hopefuls, qualified for the A finals on the first night of the Canadian Olympic Trials in Toronto. Lorne Wigginton and Ella Jansen Missed the 400m freestyle.
Wigginton, 18 ('24) from the University of Michigan, was perhaps the athlete who drew the most attention after leading this morning's men's 400 free heat with a time of 3:50.97. He was within seconds of his personal best of 3:49.05, which placed him fourth at the World Junior Championships last September. The Olympic “A” standard is his 3:46.78, while the “B” standard is his 3:47.91.
edouard duffy He clocked a time of 3 minutes 58.79 seconds in this morning's qualifying session, advancing to tonight's A final in place of Wigginton.
Wigginton won't have to wait long for redemption, as he will compete in the 400 IM on Tuesday as the top seed (4:12.81). He is just a few tens of minutes off the Olympic “A” cut of 4:12.50. Wigginton is also the fourth seed in the 200 free on Wednesday and the third seed in the 200 IM on Saturday.
Jansen, an 18-year-old Tennessee native, ran a personal best time of 4:07.18 at the Pro Swim Series in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in March and qualified for the 400 free as the No. 2 seed. Participated. But in qualifying on Monday morning, he placed ninth with a time of 4:15.83, more than eight seconds better than his career best.
Jansen has three more chances to bounce back this week and is eyeing a trip to Paris this summer. She is the fourth seed in the 200 free on Tuesday, third in the 400 IM on Thursday and third in the 200 fly on Saturday. Jansen and Wigginton both train at the High Performance Center in Ontario.
Emma Okronin She also qualified for the women's 400 free in sixth place in her heat (4:14.27). The 20-year-old was a few seconds faster than her season best of 4:16.53 in December, but she is still a long way from her 2019 personal best of 4:08.11.

Another celebrity who took part in tonight's final session was a four-time Olympic medalist. kylie masse, a backstroke specialist who finished fifth in the women's 100 butterfly (58.91 points). The 28-year-old shaved a few hundredths off her previous best score of 58.93, set in 2021, in the process. She said Masse was within a second of the Olympic “A” cut (57.92) and half a second behind second-place qualifier Mary-Sophie Harvey (58.41). She will focus on Wednesday's 100-meter run and Thursday's 200-meter run, where she is the top seed in both events (58.74/2:07.13).
Tennessee's rising senior Brooklyn Daslight Also, because she qualified 10th this morning with a time of 1:00.54, she decided to skip tonight's women's 100 fly. She was within a tenth of her 2022 personal best of 1:00.48, but still a few seconds short of her Olympic “A” cut (57.92).
