The race for qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games officially began with the Volleyball World Elite 16 in Doha, Qatar in February 2023. The 2024 season will begin in Doha in the first week of March, with the final event of the Olympic qualification cycle being the Ostrava Elite 16, which will conclude on June 9. After the international points-earning tournaments, we bring you the latest updates on the Beach Volleyball Olympic Rankings.
On a dreary, ordinary Friday in April, Chase Budinger and Myles Evans won perhaps the greatest Olympic race of all time.
There were probably about 50 people there to see it.
The NORCECA Continental Finals playoff is a tournament worth the same Olympic points and entry points as the Challenge, but with a smaller number of participating teams instead of 24. In the final, Budinger and Evans faced Trevor Crabb and Theo Brunner. Budinger and Evans won the third set, 15-13, and the normally calm and quiet Budinger celebrated his victory in an uncharacteristically emotional way. He screamed and beat his chest. Friends and family swarmed the court. Many viewers were at best confused and at worst despised Budinger and Evans' victory.
Why all the fuss over NORCECA?
Because it may have indirectly determined the Olympic race.
Budinger and Evans traveled to the Dominican Republic, swept the field and took home 800 Olympic points, but that wasn't the only impact of their victory. In fact, the entry points they gained propelled them to the top seeds at last week's Elite 16 in Espinho, Portugal, making it a much easier run than Crabb and Brunner had to qualify. They lived up to that expectation, advancing to the main draw and winning their pool to finish in fifth place. That second consecutive fifth place finish in the Elite 16 added another 300 points to their already comfortable lead.
With just two events remaining – the A-Challenge in Stare Jablonki, Poland, and the Elite 16 in Ostrava, Czech Republic – Budinger and Evans currently lead Crabb and Brunner by 540 points. Even if Budinger and Evans cannot add a single point to their total, Crabb and Brunner would still need to win gold in Poland and then win the qualifying round in Ostrava and finish fifth or better.
Espinho made a similarly significant gain on the women's side, recruiting 22-year-old Spaniards Tania Moreno and Daniela Alvarez. Moreno and Alvarez, who are redshirting this season from TCU in pursuit of an Olympic spot, qualified in Paris with fourth-place finishes and the highest points they had during the qualifying period. They currently sit 15th in the Olympic rankings and join veterans Lili Fernández and Elsa Baquerizo as the only Spanish women to qualify for the Olympics.
