Ohio State has been searching for a new running backs coach since Mike Alford's sudden departure from the coaching staff, and the Buckeyes now have one.
Ohio State University has hired former Oregon State assistant coach Carlos Loughlin as its new running backs coach for the 2024 season, the school announced on X/Twitter.
Initial reports suggested Loughlin signed a two-year contract with Ohio State.
Loughlin will be taking on his third on-field coaching role with the Buckeyes, having previously worked as a weight room assistant, offensive analyst and high school director in Memphis.
From there, he transferred to Florida State, where he held the director position at the same high school in 2020, contributing to the Seminoles' top-25 ranked freshman class that year.
Loughlin's first on-field coaching role came at Western Kentucky as the running backs coach during the 2021 season, where he gained 44.2 points per game and 536 yards per game, leading the F.B.S. He spearheaded an offense that ranked second in points.
He will join Oregon in 2022 and has emerged as a strong recruiting force both on the trail and in the transfer portal, helping bring Bucky Irving and Noah Whittington to the Ducks' backfield and joining last year's He helped recruit Jordan James to Oregon through the portal in the offseason.
Now, Loughlin joins one of the most skilled running back rooms in college football at Ohio State, featuring returning starter Trevayon Henderson and notable blue-chip transfer acquisition Quinshon Judkins at Ole Miss. He led the SEC over the past two seasons.
Loughlin replaces Alford, who left the Buckeyes this offseason to take the same position at the University of Michigan.
