NTU's victory over the Green and Gold teams was a foregone conclusion after they got off to a lightning start at the beginning of the first period. The Pinks took the lead in the first few minutes thanks to Mark Kanins, before NTU scored five more points to end the first period. UoN managed to salvage something just before going through the goal they were given and falling 5-1 down.
Overturning that scoreline, even with two periods left, seemed like an insurmountable task, and it was. The first period served as a microcosm of the rest of the match, with NTU's aggressive and sharp attacking play outsmarting their opponent's disorganized defense and aggressive attacking play.
NTU was clearly on top
Despite UoN taking the lead in the first minutes of the second period, NTU continued to outsmart them, and a similar pattern to the first period emerged, with the home side trailing by 10 by two-thirds of the match. They boasted an astonishing lead of 3-3. As the match progressed, both teams found their rhythm. NTU were clearly on top, but UoN continued to fail to take chances even when they had a numerical advantage by surrounding their opponents' crease, dashing any fleeting hopes of a comeback.
Despite a brief altercation between the two sides, the referee and linesman quickly stopped the fight, much to the dismay of the crowd. NTU added one penalty goal and six other goals to UoN's just one goal, ending the match with a resounding victory with a final score of 17-4.
NTU will be hoping that the national team's historic start this year will give them momentum.
Overall, NTU's quality was dominant across the board, making them fully deserving winners. Despite the team's performance, the Green and Gold fans were just as vocal as the home supporters and there was a great atmosphere in the 21-goal thriller. NTU will be hoping the national team's historic start to the year will somehow propel them to the overall title, while Nottingham University will be desperate to retain the title and make up for this performance.
