Nikhil Kamath, co-founder of Zerodha, recalled watching cricket in his youth and said that in recent years, “the bias towards the wealthy has become more pronounced.” In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Nikhil Kamath wrote that he “vividly remembers lying on the mattress watching all the cricket.” When India won against Pakistan in a game we used to play with our families when we were kids, the area stopped and we celebrated in the streets :).”
He further added: “It seems like things are different today. A lot of the kids I meet (note the bias due to wealth) seem to be talking about other sports, video games, etc.”
While talking about the cricket franchise, he said: Would you go long or short on a cricket franchise at today’s valuations?”
In response to the post, one user wrote, “I feel more attached to my local team CSK than the national team these days. Perhaps we are becoming more like the US/UK franchises, and loyalty is tied to your city. The feeling of hangover and loss/win is felt more strongly in the franchise team than in the national team. Lately, the series between the two countries has become completely indifferent. I think it's gotten so boring that people only follow the national team at the World Cup. We need a series like Benson and Hedges to revive cricket fans at the national level.”
Another wrote that the current era of cricket is witnessing “individual favoritism”, adding that “it is difficult to overcome the nostalgia of cricket matches and celebrations in the streets, but the growing interest of today's youth… Investing in a cricket franchise signals a change in the sporting world. Could this be indicative of a trend toward increased interest in more diverse sports?”
