NEWARK, N.J. — The Newark City Council president has officially thrown his hat into the ring to replace the late U.S. Rep. Donald Payne Jr.
LaMonica McIver announced On Monday, a “petition has been filed” for her to run for a seat in Congress later this year. She will be vying to replace Mr. Payne in New Jersey's 10th Congressional District. The district includes Newark and several municipalities in Essex, Hudson, and Union counties.

A special primary election to determine Democratic and Republican candidates will be held on Tuesday, July 16th, and a special general election, including independent and third-party candidates, will be held on Wednesday, September 18th. read more: Governor Murphy calls for special election to replace Donald Payne Jr.
McIver was elected to the Newark City Council in 2018 as the youngest woman ever elected to the city council.
According to the city's website,

According to McIver's campaign website, some of the accomplishments she has seen during her tenure as City Council member include advancing community health initiatives, supporting the construction of affordable housing, and supporting Newark's youth. This includes creating recreational opportunities for residents, and engaging in beautification activities such as: As the Hope Box Project.
After Payne's death, McIver issued a statement praising Payne's advocacy on issues such as health care, homeland security, gun control, infrastructure and women's rights.
McIver is a political ally of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and received Baraka's endorsement for his bid for Congress on Monday.
The mayor called McIver a “proven leader” who values ”community, opportunity, equality and justice.”
“There are no fiercer advocates or more dedicated voters in our democracy than Black American women,” Baraka said. “Therefore, it is an honor to support someone who will be the first black woman to represent Newark residents in the halls of Congress. If elected, Ms. McIver will have the same legacy that Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman carved out before her.” I have great confidence that I can start running on the road.”
