They scored how many goals?!
In one of the most stunning developments in a state final in recent memory – which includes a marathon 4OT game in 2023 – St. Augustine edged Don Bosco Prep in a game that will be talked about for a long time. Traditionally defensive-conscientious, both teams had allowed seven total goals in state tournament play entering the Non-Public final. They combined for seven goals in the first period alone. By the time the final horn sounded, a staggering 16 goals were put on the board, etching “Howl” by The Gaslight Anthem into everyone’s brains for an eternity. St. Augustine became the first team in a state final to score 10 goals and won it 10-6 to repeat as Non-Public champions for the first time. It became the highest-scoring hockey state final in New Jersey history, besting the previous mark of 13 set by St. Joseph (Mont.) and Brick Township in 1984.

Northern Highlands returns to the top
Northern Highlands played like a bitter team in the state tournament – in a good way. The players wanted to do everything in their power to get rid of the bad taste of a loss to Chatham in the semifinals a year ago and they did just that. Three of the team’s biggest weapons in Jake Baratta, Brent Beswick and Vincenzo Capano combined for three goals and four assists, including Capano’s go-ahead goal with 6:19 left in regulation, to give Northern Highlands a 4-3 win over Manalapan to win the Public state title. Northern Highlands outshot Manalapan 30-14 in the game. It marked the program’s third state title in the last six years.

Pingry captures its first girls title
It was a defensive chess match and goaltending duel in the girls hockey state final between Pingry and Immaculate Heart. That narrative dissipated for a span of 3:57 in the early stages of the second period but reemerged the rest of the way. In that stretch, Charlotte Diemar scored twice around a goal from Gianna Butto. That 2-1 lead Pingry developed would not be relinquished and the team held on for the final 23 minutes of play to win the program’s first state title. Kate Niccolai turned aside 33 shots in the win.
Singley’s heroics cap Knolls-Hills rally to Cinderella title
Morris Knolls-Hills had the early spark with Dylan Williams’ power-play goal in the first minute but Gov. Livingston-New Providence scored three unanswered goals to go up 3-1 and was seemingly taking over. Michael Simone got the comeback started late in the second and Jake McCloud tied the game just before the midway mark in the third. With 38 seconds left, Eli Singley redirected a centering feed from Simone to the top shelf and Morris Knolls-Hills was in the driver’s seat. His first goal of the season and second of his career was the difference and Morris Knolls-Hills got payback on Gov. Livingston-New Providence with a 4-3 win and Public Co-Op title. Just two years ago, it was Gov. Livingston-New Providence ending Morris Knolls-Hills’ bid for a three-peat in the 2022 Public C final.
Lukko climbs the all-time points list
Ryan Lukko reaching 300 career points is undoubtedly one of the more memorable moments of the season, especially since it’s a club with very few members. He had one big performance before his team was eliminated by Gov. Livingston-New Providence in the quarterfinals. Against Toms River South-East in the first round, Lukko scored all three goals, including the game-winner in overtime, in a 3-2 victory. That goal gave him 317 career points, which moved him ahead of Cranford’s Pat Slocum into the No. 2 spot on New Jersey’s all-time list***, only behind Brick’s Jim Dowd, who had 375. It’s interesting to think what could’ve happened if not for a COVID-shortened 2021 season in which his team played about half the number of games.
Bergen Catholic finds a way to edge St. Joseph (Met.)
Bergen Catholic took a few punches early on from St. Joseph (Met.) in the first round of the state tournament and stared at a 3-0 deficit at the midway point of the game. The Crusaders slowly got back on track and forced overtime at 5-5 thanks to a pair of third-period goals from Matt Maglio. He completed a natural hat trick with 6:28 to go in overtime to cap a wild 6-5 win for Bergen Catholic.
Conetta nearly helps Pope John upset Don Bosco Prep
In the Non-Public quarterfinals, Don Bosco Prep had its hands full with Pope John. The Ironmen scored the first two goals but Pope John clawed back and Anthony Conetta started turning them away left and right to keep the game tied. He had 43 saves through regulation and the game went into overtime. Despite Conetta’s best efforts to power Pope John to an upset, Ferry Netusil scored for Don Bosco Prep just 26 seconds into overtime to send his team to the state semifinal. Conetta’s performance was undoubtedly one of the best in the entire tournament.
Pingry girls ends Morristown-Beard’s reign
In a rematch of last year’s state final, Pingry took down the only team to have won a girls hockey state championship in Morristown-Beard. It seemed like the Big Blue were almost headed to another close, heart-crushing defeat down a goal late in regulation, but Lizzy Nikitin provided the spark to tie the game. Just 39 seconds into overtime, Alexis Glasofer put home a rebound to vanquish Pingry’s ghosts and send it to the state final. Niccolai had 32 saves in the big win.
Field lifts Pingry past Seton Hall Prep in OT
Pingry erased a 2-0 deficit in the first period and then took care of a 3-2 deficit in the second. It took some late goals to tie the game both times. Charlie Sherman struck with six seconds left in the first and Alex Payne beat the clock later on. That was all the scoring for regulation, so overtime was needed. Freddie Field had another big moment and scored the game-winner with 3:19 left in the fourth period. Javier Trujillo had a fantastic game in goal and had 36 saves.
Immaculate Heart turns the tables on Princeton Day
When Lily Ryan scored 1:08 into the third period to give Princeton Day a 3-1 lead, Immaculate Heart didn’t back down. As she’s done all season, Claire Chanfrau supplied a spark that helped the Blue Eagles fend off elimination in the state semifinal. She brought the team to within a goal and then Gianna Butto and Julie Foglia scored 58 seconds apart to turn a one-goal deficit into a one-goal lead with 1:46 to go. Delaney Cozine had 26 saves on the day and held down the fort until the final horn to send Immaculate Heart to its first-ever girls state final appearance.
Simonet sends St. Augustine to the state semis
Ty Simonet had his fingerprints all over St. Augustine’s run to its second consecutive state championship and that includes his heroics in the quarterfinals against Princeton Day. The team squandered a pair of one-goal leads and Princeton Day sent the game to overtime thanks to Filip Kacmarsky’s goal with 45.7 seconds left in regulation. Simonet was in the right place at the right time to keep his team’s season alive with a goal 4:30 into overtime to seal a 3-2 win.
Rumson-Fair Haven ousts Hillsborough in overtime
The start for Rumson-Fair Haven in the South Public quarterfinal was less than ideal. Hillsborough jumped out to a 3-1 lead and Rumson-Fair Haven had to slowly climb out of the hole. Thanks to Nik Doumas and Andrew Croddick, they did just that. Doumas scored twice between the second and third period to help tie the game with 1:52 to go in regulation and Croddick lit the lamp just 1:41 into overtime. Rumson-Fair Haven stayed alive and advanced with a thrilling 5-4 win.
Fair Lawn tri-op upsets Verona-Glen Ridge
Verona-Glen Ridge was just removed from topping Glen Rock in the longest game in state high school hockey history in the Kelly Cup final and Fair Lawn-Bergenfield-Dumont wasn’t impressed. Four different players lit the lamp to help the 13th-seeded Cutters knock off fourth-seeded Verona-Glen Ridge, 4-2. It marked Fair Lawn’s third state tournament win since 2009. Devyn Bittner, Conor Pinkham, Anthony Edson and Michael Ferrante all scored and Jack Feinstein had 26 saves.
North Hunterdon-Voorhees wins playoff debut
There were a lot of positives in the first few weeks of North Hunterdon-Voorhees’ inaugural season. The team eventually spiraled into a 16-game unbeaten streak entering its first state playoff game against Edison-Metuchen-J.P. Stevens. Aiden Ball, Dylan Swon and Josh Kelco combined to score six unanswered goals to pave the way for the team’s 6-1 win, establishing another meaningful first for a program with a bright future.
Dickerson powers Morris Knolls-Hills into state final
The run Luke Dickerson went on in the state tournament was exceptional. He scored three goals in the sectional final 6-2 win against Tenafly-Cresskill-Leonia. That extended his goal-scoring streak to 11 games and he scored 24 goals in that span. Five of them came in the sectional semifinals against KJS United. His fourth of the game broke a 3-3 tie with 2:10 left in regulation and he capped his second five-goal game of the season with an empty netter.
Esposito, Schmelzer, Kushnir lead Manalapan to final
There is a lot to cover for what was the best season in Manalapan’s program history. The team’s run started well with a 5-1 win over Watchung Hills but then it needed three one-goal wins against Hunterdon Central (in overtime), Monroe and Westfield to punch a ticket to Prudential Center. Christian Esposito was marvelous in goal across all four wins and had a .959 save percentage capped by a 35-save shutout against Westfield in the sectional final.
Offensively, it was Michael Schmelzer and Josh Kushnir stealing the show. Schmelzer scored four consecutive game-winning goals, including one in overtime, to lead the way. He added two goals in the state final against Northern Highlands and ultimately wrapped his state tournament with 10 goals in five games. Manalapan as a team scored 14 goals in those five games and Schmelzer had a point on 11 of them. Kushnir, meanwhile, was the set-up guy. In that same stretch, he had nine assists and 10 points. The two, fittingly, connected on the only goal in the sectional final win over Westfield.
Newton co-op snaps playoff drought
The last time Newton-Lenape Valley won a state tournament game was 2018. That ended in the North Jersey, Public Co-Op play-in round against Clifton-Passaic Valley-Cedar Grove. Maksym Pastukh had another stellar performance with four goals and Justin Zappe had three assists in a hard-fought 6-5 win.
Randolph sinks Ridgewood late
Ridgewood came out strong and figuratively punched Randolph in the mouth with two first-period goals. Andrew George got one back in the second but Randolph entered the third trailing by a goal. Daniel Sharkey and Keegan Melly scored 41 seconds apart to turn the tables and put Randolph ahead but Ridgewood had the answer from Finn Doherty. It stayed knotted at 3-3 for almost 10 minutes until Sharkey gave Randolph the lead with 44 seconds to play in the game. Jase Zangara scored an empty-netter from there to seal a thrilling 5-3 win.
Silverman helps push GLNP back to state final
Goals were at a premium in Gov. Livingston-New Providence’s South Jersey, Public Co-Op final matchup against Manasquan-Point Pleasant Beach. Daltry Ferrigno scored a big goal to tie the game with 6:14 left in the second period and Brady Silverman was awarded a penalty shot in the final seconds. He pulled off a scary-good move and gave GLNP a 2-1 lead it wouldn’t relinquish en route to a 2-1 victory. Scott Capan was great in goal and had 20 saves. Aidan DiStefano was equally as good for Manasquan-Point Pleasant Beach with 26 saves of his own.
Forster, Leonardi help OT-S-M string together wins
Ocean Township-Shore-Monmouth found a pretty good recipe for success in its first two South Jersey, Public Co-Op games. The first part is to have Roman Leonardi shut the door completely and the second called for Liam Forster to score the game-winning goal. In the first round against Freehold Township-Point Pleasant Boro, Forster opened the scoring 2:52 in and Leonardi took care of everything from there. He posted a 27-save shutout in a 1-0 win, holding that one-goal advantage for 42:08. In the next round against favored Robbinsville-Allentown, Forster broke through with a go-ahead goal with 10:44 left in regulation. That was all Leonardi needed there in a 48-save shutout. Those back-to-back 1-0 shutout wins extended Leonardi’s shutout streak, which officially ended at 131:53 in the sectional semifinals against Manasquan-Point Pleasant Beach. It’s the first time the program had won two playoff games since it was just Ocean Township-Shore in 2014.
Korenbaum wins the day for Montclair
Montclair was engaged in a tight battle against Glen Rock in the North Public first round. Sam Korenbaum had arguably his best performance of the season between the pipes and couldn’t have picked a better time. He kept the game scoreless until Sam Rotella lit the lamp with 7:46 to go in regulation. Korenbaum shut the door the rest of the way and sealed a 44-save shutout in Montclair’s 1-0 win.
Howell-Matawan regroups to top Brick
Things looked like they were going well when Tony Brandl scored his second of the game to give Howell-Matawan a 3-0 lead in the second period of its South Jersey, Public Co-Op quarterfinal against Brick. They didn’t plan on Peter Morris and Jake Toye combining for three goals to tie the game before the end of regulation. Matt Gresko felt it was time for him to have a two-goal game of his own and scored just 16 seconds into overtime to help Howell-Matawan advance with a 4-3 win. It marked the program’s deepest run in the state playoffs since reaching the 2015 Public A final.
Wall ends Ridge’s lengthy run
Ridge and Prudential Center have become almost synonymous in recent years. The Red Devils won the 2023 Public A title, marking the fourth consecutive tournament the team has reached the Rock. Wall brought that run to an end in the first round of the South Public tournament. Both teams traded goals in the first period before Wall outscored Ridge, 2-1, in each of the final two frames to earn a 5-3 victory. Michael Hoarle, Emmett Auch and James Byrnes combined for three goals and five assists in the win. This was Wall’s first state tournament win since reaching the Public C semifinals in 2018.
Bayonne tri-op wins fourth playoff game in 23 years
When Bayonne-Belleville-McNair squared off against East Brunswick-Spotswood-South River, it was a big game for both programs. East Brunswick was appearing in and hosting its first-ever playoff game. Bayonne was looking for just its fourth playoff win since 2002. What a wild game it was. The lead changed hands twice and John Whyte’s goal with 9:41 to go in regulation sent it to overtime. Bayonne rebounded and Rohan Garg scored the game-winner 10:59 in and Bayonne moved on. Sydney Fogu had 41 saves in the win and Alex Fiermonte had a goal and two assists. Ryan Villavert had two goals of his own.
Ebel’s late power-play goal downs RFH
Rumson-Fair Haven had a pair of one-goal leads in its sectional semifinal game against Westfield. Westfield erased those leads twice. With the game tied in the final minutes of regulation, Westfield got a power play and the always-reliable Alex Ebel cashed in for a goal with 2:12 to go. They would hold onto that lead and pick up a 3-2 win to reach the state semifinal for the fifth consecutive tournament. Andrew Raber had 19 saves in the win and Alex Baret stopped 31 shots in the loss.
