Midland High School got off to a strong start in the Michigan High School Girls Soccer Playoffs with a shutout of Big Rapids in Monday's Division 2 district opener.
The Chemix defeated Big Rapids 25-1, winning 8-0 and improving to 13-1-3. Midland advances to play the winner of Wednesday's district game between Mount Pleasant and Bay City Central.
Lizzie Striebel led Midland High School with a hat trick and added an assist as the Chemix led 5-0 at halftime. Elliot Hayes added two goals.
Sydney Fulcher, Alana Beckett and Ellery Laverty added one goal, and Fulcher had three assists. Beckett added two assists and Regan Vocal had one.
Niobe Marchalant and Cady McPeek shared goals in the shutout win for Midland, which is ranked No. 3 in the state in Division 2.

Hemlock 5-10, Gladwin 3-2: Lindsey Liskas hit a home run in the second game, setting a Hemlock record and leading the Huskies to a doubleheader sweep. Liscas, who had two hits in the game, set a Hemlock single-season softball record with her eighth home run of the season. Carly Noyes and Audrey Vasher also hit home runs for the win inside the circle. Lillian Martinez led the offense with three hits, while Maddie Hall, Noyes and Brooke Gustin each added two hits. Vasher had two hits to lead Hemlock in the opener, and Kayla Konopf had five strikeouts in the win. Claira Salo had two walks and Addison Stockford had two RBIs.
baseball
Midland High School 18-17, Flint Carman-Ainsworth 4-1: Adam Haag and Eli Kell each had three hits in the opener, and Austin Anderson got the win on the mound. Cade Sanborn, Kell, and Noah Wall took the mound and won the second game. Charlie Sabin led the offense with three hits.
