Even before he's coached a single Michigan football practice, assistant Greg Scruggs has been in a lot of trouble.
As the Detroit News' Angelique Chengelis first reported, Scruggs was arrested for drunk driving in Ann Arbor just before 3 a.m. Saturday. As a result, less than a month later, his job is in jeopardy.
The Michigan State football program released a statement from head coach Sherone Moore announcing that Scruggs has been suspended indefinitely pending an investigation into the incident.
“Greg made an unfortunate mistake and was arrested for drunk driving,” Moore said. “He made no excuses and took responsibility for his actions. The football program and athletic department have suspended Greg indefinitely while the details of the incident are investigated.”
Spring practice for the Wolverines begins Monday, but there is no clear answer as to who will be overseeing the defensive line when practice begins.
Scruggs came to Ann Arbor by way of Wisconsin, where he served as defensive line coach under Luke Fickell. He came to Madison after two years as an assistant in the NFL, but was previously with Fickell in Cincinnati. He has ties to Moore. He was a player at Louisville, where Moore got his start as a coach.
