The Mets probably won't be used as an example for baserunning tutorials any time soon.
The team made a mysterious base-running error with no outs on second base in the top of the second inning against the Guardians at Progressive Field on Monday.
Starling Marte sent the ball back to pitcher Ben Lively, who hit a 1-6-5-3 double play. Lively turned and threw the ball to second base, attempting to catch J.D. Martinez, who was caught between second and third base. He was eventually tagged out by third baseman Jose Ramirez.
However, the play did not end there as Marte attempted to advance to second base and turned back to return to first base.
Ramirez realized what was happening and made a quick throw to first base, allowing Josh Naylor to apply the tag in time to complete the double play.
“Oh my god,” SNY play-by-play announcer Gary Cohen said on the air after the play unfolded.
The inning didn't get much better for the Mets either.
Brett Batty ended the frame with a three-pitch strikeout to give the Mets a 2-0 lead.
The Mets scored one run in the third inning with Tomas Nido's solo home run.
However, the day didn't get much better for Marte. Marte claimed a strikeout and was ejected in the fourth inning.
The Amazons are in an unfortunate position heading into Monday night's game against the Guardians having lost seven of their last 10 games.
The Mets are below .500 this season with 21 wins and 25 losses.
They made a minor trade early Monday morning that sent Johan Ramirez to the Dodgers in exchange for cash.
Ramirez was named to the Mets' opening day roster and pitched an 11.81 ERA in 5 1/3 innings before being designated for assignment on April 8 and then traded three days later.
He was placed on waivers by the Mets on May 6th.
