DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Family members are holding a vigil in his memory after police say a former college football player was shot and killed by his girlfriend.
It happened Wednesday at an apartment complex in DeKalb County.
“It's the worst. It was the hardest thing ever,” said Antonio Vallely, Trayvon Vallely's father.
That's the only way Valerie can explain the past few days.

Police announced that his son, former college football player Trayvon Valerie, 25, was shot and killed by his girlfriend, Nina Shaw, 25.
DeKalb County Police say Trayvon and Nina were arguing at an apartment complex in DeKalb County.

During the argument, Nina called her father.
That's when Trayvon's father, Louricus Shaw, 47, and Trayvon started arguing. Police said Louricas fired a shot at Valerie, but missed.
Valerie then fired back at Loyrikas, shooting him in the hip. That's when his girlfriend, Nina Shaw, shot and killed her boyfriend, Trayvon.
Police arrested and charged both the father and his girlfriend with murder. He didn't deserve to die the way he did,” Antonio Valerie said.
Trayvon and his uncle Stephen Valerie worked together. “I had the opportunity to train him and coached him for almost a week. When he graduated, I told him I was proud of him and that it would be the last conversation we would have. I didn't expect that.”
Family, friends, former teammates and coaches gathered at Rose Jordan Park to honor and remember Trayvon.
Everyone wore blue, their favorite color.
“You saw the support he received today. He loved football and loved his family. That's how Trey described it. It was very emotional. Everyone was rooting for him as much as they could. touched everyone's life,” Benjamin Kelly Jr. said.
The Valerie family announced that Trayvon will be buried in his home state of Mississippi.
