The Michigan High School Athletic Association is adding to its list of sponsored sports.
The organization announced Thursday that men's volleyball and women's field hockey will be the sports that will sponsor postseason tournaments starting in the 2025-26 school year. The MHSAA Representative Council approved the addition at its spring meeting.
Men's volleyball and field hockey are the first new sports added to the MHSAA's list of tournament offerings since men's and women's lacrosse in 2004-2005.
Men's volleyball is played in the spring, and women's field hockey is played in the fall. The 2024-25 school year will be a period of development for the MHSAA in collaboration with the governing bodies of both sports.
The council also agreed to begin seeding boys and girls basketball and soccer district-wide starting next school year using Michigan Power Assessment data. Previously, MPR data was only used to seed the top two teams in each district for basketball and soccer.
Starting with the 2025-26 school year, the MHSAA winter calendar will end one week early. The adjusted calendar includes the men's basketball championship game being played the second weekend in March. The state finals for girls basketball and boys swimming and diving are permanently held the third weekend in March and conclude the winter sports season.
