NORTH KINGSTOWN โ The season got off to a near-perfect start for North Kingstown boys volleyball, and one loss didn't derail it.
There's no more pressure to be undefeated. Still, staying in the top seed in Division I, which they have maintained all season, would be a big step toward reclaiming the state title.
NK suffered a 3-2 loss to North Smithfield Co-op on April 18, but bounced back the following week with two 3-0 sweeps. They defeated Coventry, which was winless until April, and then hosted a big game against Cranston East last Wednesday, but that team surprisingly defeated North Smithfield in the Northmen's next game. . The Thunderbolts were doing well last month, but the Skippers defeated them 3-1, effectively knocking them out of the race for the top seed with 8 wins and 3 losses. Meanwhile, the Skippers improved their record to 10 wins and 1 loss.
The Skippers defeated Division II Barrington 3-1 in nonleague play on Friday night, followed by a 3-0 win over East Greenwich on Tuesday.
“I don't think we're in the lead or anything like that. I think every team is equally good,” NK outside hitter Cody Tow said after defeating Barrington on Friday. “Any team can beat any team. There are no bad teams in the league. Even the D-II teams are very good. Barrington played well today.”
