South Bend, Indiana – Penn State lost to Notre Dame, 4-1, in the Big Ten Conference series opener on Friday night at Compton Family Ice Arena.
The Nittany Lions have now lost their fifth straight Big Ten game and the loss drops them to 10-10-3 overall and 2-8-3-0-0-2-draws in conference play, while the win improves the Irish to 12-11-2 on the year and 6-7-2-0-0-1-draws in league play.
How it happened
- Notre Dame took the lead at 6:29 of the first frame when Danny Nelson tucked a rebound into the net for a 1-0 lead.
- The Irish extended their lead with 0.6 seconds left in the first period when Trevor Janicke curled a corner kick past the sophomore goalkeeper's blocker. Noah Grannan (Germantown, Wis.) won 2-0.
- Penn State cut the lead in half midway through the second period with the junior. Dylan Legris (Buffalo, N.Y.) got the freshman rebound. Dane Dwiak (Pittsburgh, Pa.)’s first attempt was turned down with the score at 10 minutes, 47 seconds.
- The home team regained a two-goal lead when Maddox Fleming took advantage of a turnover in the Nittany Lions' defensive zone, picking off a corner kick from the high slot and past Grannan's glove at 14:35 into the middle period to make the score 3-1.
- Ryan Siedem put the game away, scoring with a shot into an empty net with 75 seconds left to make it 4-1.
Goalkeeper
Grannan made 21 saves in the loss and dropped to 3-4-2 and 2-ties on the season, while his opponent, Ryan Bichel, stopped 38 of 39 shots in the win and improved to 12-11-2.
Note
- Penn State held a commanding 39-25 lead in shots on goal but failed to convert on five power play opportunities, but was a perfect 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
- The Nittany Lions are 2-6-3 after conceding their first goal in a game this season.
