MONROE, Conn. โ It was a good start to the season for the Mask High School boys volleyball team, winning six of eight games.
“There are a lot of injuries, especially,'' Maskouk coach Hipolito Castro said.
The Panthers have been without two outside hitters and recently two middle hitters, but they have maintained their winning ways. That includes a 3-0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-16) win over visiting New Milford on Monday night.
Dan Ferris had 12 kills, four digs and four aces. Michael Majerski had eight kills and three aces. Mathias Addae and Tyler Ballinger both had five kills. Ballinger added two blocks. Andrew Oleya recorded four digs. Nate Kurkosky had three goals and 21 assists. Nicky Carvajal had three aces.
The Panthers also defeated Xavier of Middletown, St. Joseph of Trumbull, Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport, Amity of Woodbridge and Bridgeport Central.
“They're playing very well,” Castro said. “We're passing well, we're serving well. And we're playing at a really high level.”
Musk was certainly at a high level last season en route to winning the state championship. The Panthers want more of the same and can only get stronger when they give it their all.
The Panthers lost to a pair of traditionally tough teams, FCIAC foe Ridgefield and Southwest Conference rival and perennial powerhouse Joel Barlow of Reading.
The Panthers are scheduled to play Ridgefield again at home on Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. The Panthers will also play non-conference games against Cheshire and Shelton to close out April.
