PETOSKY โ The Marquette High School girls varsity soccer team split a 2-2 record in games played Friday afternoon and Saturday in Traverse City and Petoskey.
On Friday, MSHS suffered its first loss of the spring season with a 2-0 victory over Traverse City St. Francis.
Sentinels junior Jocelyn Ruzzo got her team going with a long-range goal off an assist from senior Allison McCarthy. Senior teammate Lily Eberhard then made it 2-0 with an assist from senior Ellery Thierry.
Marquette traveled to the Petoskey Tournament on Saturday morning, losing to host North Women's 5-0 in the opener, defeating Bay City's John Glenn 3-0 and losing to Grand Blanc 4-0.
Marquette's scoring against John Glenn came with an assist from Thierry to Eberhard, Eberhard to freshman Cora Wernholm and Eberhard had no assists.
“The girls were ready to play on Friday. It was really nice to get two goals off a really good St. Francis team.” Sentinels head coach Colleen McKay said in an email detailing the results. โI saw great movement and energy from everyone.
“Saturday, we played another great team. Playing three games in one day is tough mentally and physically, but these girls fought hard until the end.”
Marquette is now 10-4-1 and will host Iron Mountain at the Kauffman Sports Complex north of Marquette on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
Then the Upper Peninsula Tournament hosted by the Sentinels begins at 11 a.m. Saturday in Kauffman. The tournament, which was previously a season-ending tournament, is now a prelude to his MHSAA Division 2 district tournament, which the Sentinels will open May 29 at Gaylord.
