The Marbury Bulldogs Boys Varsity Soccer team traveled to Dothan the first weekend in March to compete in the Gold Division of the Wiregrass Cup hosted by Houston Academy. The Bulldogs won all three games in dominant fashion, with Ricardo Rangel and Ryan Lavender each scoring five goals in three games.
“This is the first tournament win for the boys program, and I couldn't be more proud of this team, their accomplishments, and their hard work throughout the tournament,” Marbury head coach Thomas Sowell said.
The Bulldogs defeated Ariton High School in the tournament opener, winning 7-0.
Rangel and Lavender each scored two goals, while Aidan Destin, Jeremy Bylinmar and Will Walker each had one goal.
In the second game of the tournament, Marbury faced a physical team from GW Long High School. Rangel, Lavender and Destin each scored a goal for the Bulldogs, who won 3-1.
In the final game of the tournament, Marbury led 2-0 at halftime, but Northside Methodist scored two goals to tie the score at 2-2 at halftime.
The Bulldogs had an excellent first half, scoring three goals for a 5-2 victory. Rangel and Lavender each scored two goals in the game, and Chris Daughtry scored an additional goal to round out the scoring.
“I'm very proud of the way our players played this weekend. They really exemplified the core values of our team and really embraced the family mentality to our team. . The boys faced a lot of adversity with the wet weather and it was great to see them overcome those conditions and put in a brilliant performance,” Sowell said.
Marbury has a record of 5-2 and hopes a strong showing at the Wiregrass Cup will help the Bulldogs finish the regular season and postseason on a strong note.
