On Monday night, February 26th, the Dare County Shrine Club was packed to capacity for a meet-and-greet to welcome Timmy Charity as Manteo High School's new head football coach.
Charity graduated from MHS in 2007 and helped the football team win a regional title and state championship appearance in 2006. He attended North Carolina Central University on a full football scholarship, where he played four years as a center and right guard.
He continued his charity work as a semi-pro, playing for the Carolina Ducks, East Carolina Rams, and East Carolina Phantoms from 2013 to 2020.
During this time, Charity led the Manteo Middle School football team as head football coach and assistant basketball coach from 2013 to 2016, then held the position of head JV football coach at MHS from 2016 to 2018. He has been with the varsity football team since 2019 and has been the head coach of the varsity men's basketball team since 2018.
In a speech to students, parents and community members, Charity outlined the goals of the MHS football program.
He listed five goals for the 2024 soccer season. The first is to bring back the traditions of when Manteo was playing. The second is to get as many middle school and high school students back on the soccer field as possible. Third, work on making your athletes bigger, faster, and stronger, especially through work in the weight room. Fourth, develop scholarship athletes. And fifth, encourage community support.
His goals for the team included maintaining academic standards for all players by maintaining at least a 2.5 GPA, competing daily, and winning a conference championship.
Charity said the ultimate goal is to bring back a state championship to Manteo.
“We are starting from scratch with this program,” he told players and families. “It doesn't matter what happened in the past, we're going to start from scratch.”
He encouraged everyone in the room to get their children and grandchildren back involved in Manteo soccer and emphasized the importance of community involvement. He also said the company plans to form a joint venture team if there is enough interest.
“We need to fill the fan stands,” he stressed.
The charity said one way the community can support the program is through business sponsorship. “We don't want community support only when we're doing well. We need everyone to stay involved and support us all the time.”
The charity said a reorganization of the conference will take place, although not next year. Manteo High School could move to a smaller 2A conference or even 1A. “We play in a tough conference right now,” Charity said.
“It's going to be tough, right? Yeah. We can get back to the culture of competing at that level, and that's what I want to do.”
