GRIFFIN — Griffin and Spalding High School football teams are preparing for the final stages of their seasons.
This year, the Griffin High Lady Bears, led by head coach Katie Garrison, are 4-11 on the season.
“Our season got off to a great start. We beat the number two team in the region in two overtimes and a penalty shootout. We were playing well together and it suited our team. Since then, we have suffered a number of injuries and have struggled to secure a spot in fourth place heading into the playoffs. We still have hopes of making it to the playoffs. We have three more regional games, one of which is Senior Night on April 12th against Spalding. I believe in our team and I believe we can win the games we need.” Garrison said.
Under the guidance of newly appointed head coach Aubrey Morgan, the Lady Jags are 4-6 on the season. The midfield duo of Denyanara Anaya and Caroline Denos helped control the pace of the game, allowing the team to dominate possession and create numerous scoring chances. Their synergy on the field has been a key element of the team's cohesive performance.
For the Griffin Bears boys soccer team, the Bears are currently 8-7 on the season. The boys team will be led by head coach Xavier Coggins.
“We started the season with a mission to change the narrative of Griffin High School football. We made great strides throughout the season and recognized how hard they have worked and what they are doing for the team. I'm very proud of what we're doing for Griffin High School. What we're doing is historic and we're not done yet. We have three games left and we hope to be successful. We're going to try to make the playoffs for the first time in a while,” Coggins said.
As Spalding High School continued its quest for a championship, Jags team captain Alex Sanchez, a senior, had an outstanding performance and was the top scorer with 10 goals and 21 points. The Jags are led by head coach Tyler Hoffman, and the team is 6-4 this season.
