England defender Lucy Bronze has called for changes to the women's football calendar to reduce the physical strain on players.
The bronze medal echoed comments from a number of team-mates and managers who expressed concern that the schedule was leading to long-term injuries ahead of England's European Championship qualifiers against Sweden and the Republic of Ireland.
England captain Leah Williamson has just returned to the team after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, but the women's game has suffered a number of similar injuries.
“Obviously, the demand is increasing,” Bronze said.
“I think it was quite difficult for me personally, even when I was at Lyon. I had two days off after the Champions League final and then went straight to preparing for the World Cup. So it's not something I'm not used to.
“Personally, I am part of the FIFA Pro team and together with Sarina (Wiegman, England manager) I have been involved in the discussions with FIFA and UEFA, but in the end I think that what will help us program the calendar better is It's up to them.Of course the quality of the match is important, but the health of the players who participated is also important.
“There's a lot of back and forth. Everyone has a different opinion, everyone has their own way they want to work, but hopefully people can come up with some things to change. I think I have an idea that could be done.
“I think some changes could make a big difference, especially for the players.”
