Erik ten Hag praised Willy Kambwala's “amazing progress” after his performance in Manchester United's match against Liverpool on Sunday.
The 19-year-old Kambwala played the full game against Liverpool, making his eighth first-team appearance for United despite a string of injury absences. Jonny Evans and Raphael Varane join Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof, Tyrell Malasia and Luke Shaw as absentees ahead of Sunday's showdown.
“I don't think they'll be back on such short notice,” Ten Hag said of Evans and Varane in his post-match press conference. “The decision to bring Willie in was because he has been training with us for a long time and his progress has been amazing, performing very well in the first game against West Ham United.
“During training we had no doubts and we could have, for example, dropped Casemiro and brought in another midfielder.”
Speaking about Kambwala, Ten Hag said: “We are confident he can do the job and he has done a great job. We are very happy, very happy and this is another signal for the future of Manchester United. That's a valid message.”
“This team, this team, has a lot of potential and if we can get more players over the season, especially in the backline where we have 27 different structures, the future will be very good.”
