Class A No. 2 Lincoln Southwest got a pair of second-half goals to pull away in a 3-1 victory over third-ranked Lincoln East in the semifinals of the girls state soccer tournament Friday afternoon at Morrison Stadium.
It puts the Silver Hawks into Monday’s 8 p.m. championship match against another conference rival — No. 3 Lincoln Pius X, a 2-1 winner of top-ranked Omaha Marian in the other semifinal earlier in the day.
It’s the second straight finals appearance for Southwest, which split a pair of regular season meetings with Pius, each winning 1-0.
Friday’s win go down as a comeback victory for Southwest, which trailed exactly nine minutes in after East forward Kate Egger snuck behind the defense and fired in from the top of the box. It was the second of the tournament and 11th of the season for the sophomore.
Southwest wasn’t behind long, though, with Peyton Held leveling just 71 seconds later.
Held, a sophomore, was in the right place when a deflected shot by teammate Malory Arehart fell to her foot. Held’s calm strike was her first goal of the year.
The Silver Hawks would add two more just over four minutes apart in the second half. The first — a penalty by All-Nebraska forward Charley Kort — put them up, and the second — Maddie Schmeling’s knock in of a corner kick — provided a little insurance.
Kort’s was her team-leading 26th of the year. It was the second of the tournament for Schmeling, who had just four coming in.
Lincoln East (14-4) 1 0 – 1
Lincoln Southwest (17-1) 1 2 – 3
GOALS: LE, Kate Eggert; LSW, Peyton Held, Charley Kort, Maddie Schmeling.
