LAFC midfielder Timothy Tillman was called up to the men's national team on Monday, along with his brother Malik, giving the pair a chance to make history at next month's Copa America against Colombia and Brazil.
If the two German-born players are able to take the field together in the same game, they would be the first brothers to play side-by-side for the United States since 1988. They are already 10 people.th Brothers can always play on the national team.
The 27 players called up by coach Gregg Berhalter are scheduled to begin reporting to training camp on May 28th, with Timothy starting Tuesday's LAFC U.S. Open Cup game against Loudoun United and Saturday's MLS game against Atlanta United. He will be able to participate in the battle. But he will miss at least two others.
Malik Tillman's season with PSV Eindhoven in the Dutch Eredivisie has come to an end.
Also on the roster are midfielders Tyler Adams, Gio Reyna and Weston McKennie, and forwards Christian Pulisic, Folarin Balogun and Josh Sargent, who last represented the United States in 2022. It was the World Cup. Sargent, who scored 16 goals in 26 games for Norwich City in the English Second Division Championship, is one of 18 players registered for the World Cup.
The Tillmans are dual citizens, born in Nuremberg, Germany, to a German mother and an American military father, and played for both Germany and the United States' youth national teams as children. However, both chose to play for the United States at the senior level, with Malik, who turns 22 next week, making his debut in 2022 and Timothy, 25, making his debut five months ago.
Malik Tillman, who played for four teams in three European countries, has appeared in 10 games for the USMNT, his last appearance being in the CONCACAF Nations League finals last March. Timothy, who joined LAFC last season, made his only appearance for the United States in a friendly against Slovenia in January, starting and playing 89 minutes.
With LAFC, he scored four goals in 13 MLS games, finishing tied for second on the team. Among field players, only Dennis Bouanga has played more minutes in league games than Tillman. He is one of only four MLS players named to the training camp roster.
The U.S. plays Colombia on June 8 in Landover, Maryland, and four days later faces Brazil in Orlando, after which Berhalter will be named to this summer's Copa America squad. The USMNT has not beaten Colombia in their last seven attempts dating back to 2005, currently the team's second-longest winless streak. The longest? Eleven against Brazil dating back to 1998.
