Water parks are open. Pools are open. Lakes are open. Summer is unofficially here and our hearts are turning to the water.
So how far are you willing to let your mind drift? No doubt, wherever you are, there's a perfect lake or public pool nearby to swim in. But how much more fun would it be to hop in the car and hit the road for a weekend getaway to one of Kentucky's fantastically satisfying swimming holes?
Moss Creek Day Use Area — Land Between the Lakes
If you're looking for a place to swim in Kentucky you need to start at LBL. Moss Creek is right where you're thinking. This was a while ago but the vibe is the same.
Gabe's Branch Falls
It never hurts to have a waterfall at your favorite swimming hole, and Gabe's Branch in eastern Kentucky's Harlan County is definitely worth a long weekend getaway.
And then comes the bonus (or no bonus, depending on your preferences): Start at the Harlan Campground-Putney Trailhead and hike to the waterfall, although you might want to incorporate a little off-roading into your adventure.
Breaks Interstate Park*
No pun intended, but you're “away” from the lake and swimming hole vibe here. And despite the headline, you're “away” from Kentucky. But that's OK, Breaks Interstate Park is a favorite of Eastern Kentuckians who don't mind crossing the Virginia border. Yes, just across the state line. There's plenty of fun to be had there, plus Breaks Interstate Splash Park.
Have a wonderful summer!
