Lamont Butler Officially called Wildcat, kentucky The men's basketball program has been announced.
Butler started all 37 games for the Aztecs last season, averaging 9.3 points per game and reaching double figures 17 times. But many remember Butler for San Diego State's 2023 Final Four appearance, hitting a buzzer-beater against FAU and helping lead SDSU to the national championship.
“Lamont Butler is the definition of a winner,” University of Kentucky head coach Mark Pope said in a release. “He may be the best perimeter defensive player in college basketball. Lamont helped coach his team to a championship the past four years, hit one of his best shots in the NCAA Tournament, and led his team to a championship game the past four years.” The championship sent him to the game.
“He is an elite student who takes his studies seriously. He cares about his community and is willing to embrace the power of wearing 'Kentucky' across his chest.” I'm really looking forward to coaching Lamont and seeing what impact he has on this team. ”
In his four-year career with the Aztecs, Butler totaled 1,008 points, 338 total assists, and 305 rebounds. Somehow, he finished both his junior and senior seasons 128-304 (42.1%).
But his performance in the 2023 NCAA Tournament will be what San Diego State fans will remember most about him. He averaged 10.5 points and 3.3 assists in five games, including an 18-point performance on 8-of-11 shooting against Creighton in the Elite Eight.
He finished his run with a 13-point performance in a loss against eventual national champion UConn. Ironically, Butler and the Aztecs would meet the Huskies again a year later and suffer the same fate in the Sweet 16.
“The last four years at San Diego State have been a dream come true,” Butler wrote upon entering the portal. “We were able to accomplish so much in our time here. The memories we made in the Aztec jerseys will be cherished forever. I have made lifelong friendships and made friendships that no one could take away. Thank you for the support of the show and our amazing fans.
