KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Women could play soccer, but they never built stadiums specifically for soccer games.
That's not true anymore.
Kansas City's current women's professional soccer team will welcome thousands of fans to a new stadium designed and built specifically for women's soccer.
“I mean, it's sold out. Not only did we build it, but they came,” said Jocelyn Monroe, the club's vice president of marketing. “It’s really exciting that the world is watching us.”
Monroe sees first-hand the impact the new stadium will have on the pitch and boardroom.
She believes this moment is an exciting new era for women's sports
“This was a leap forward. We increased our investment,” Monroe said.
Monroe also shows the way for young black women who want to get involved in the business side of women's sports.
“I didn't have many mentors who looked like me, so finding opportunities for other young girls has been a big part of my career,” she said. “This is history. I stand in history. When someone writes a book about soccer, women's soccer, or sports in general, this should be a remarkable moment. It cannot be overlooked.”
She says companies are keen to engage with the club, and not just for philanthropy.
“Yes, we want to do that. We have a real opportunity to grow your business and brand,” she said.
Monroe says this is an important moment in history for women.
“Bringing this team back to this city, in this training facility, in this stadium, is really about impacting women and giving them an opportunity to realize their dreams,” she said.
Monroe wants everyone to be a part of its history.
“This is a moment that will go down as one of the best in my career,” she said.
