This has resulted in a strong staff and rapid growth in our program. The title is well-deserved and we are fortunate to have him.”
Sommer is in his fourth year with the Holy Cross High School boys ice hockey team. As an assistant coach for the past three years, Sommer has led the team to their first Atlantic Hockey Championship appearance since 2006 and their first 20+ win season since 2013.
Prior to joining the Riga staff, Sommer served as an assistant coach with the Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL) from 2017-2021, where he coached 10 players who were drafted or signed professional contracts with NHL organizations and nine players who represented their countries in international competition. Prior to joining the Thunderbirds, Sommer worked as a skating coach at the San Jose Sharks development camp.
As a player, Sommer played for the Manchester Monarchs (ECHL) in 2016, before moving on to play for Sweden's Kallinge/Ronneby Ice Hockey Foreigning in the 2016-17 season.
During his time as a student-athlete on The Hill, Sommer helped the team to 66 victories, including a 54-40-16 tie record at Atlantic Hockey. A native of Shrewsbury, Sommer recorded 29 goals and 35 assists for 64 points in four seasons at Worcester. Sommer attended the San Jose Sharks development camp from 2008-2013 and again in 2015.
