AMES, Iowa (KCAU) – After a roller coaster season, Iowa State football held its annual spring game at Jack Trice Stadium on Saturday afternoon, finishing with a 7-6 record last season. .
All eyes were on the offense and new offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser, who replaced Nate Schielhaas. Sophomore quarterback Rocco Becht shined in his first season as ISU's center, throwing for more than 3,100 yards and 23 touchdowns. The new OC will rely heavily on its passing game this season, and Becht has returning targets Jaylin Noel, Jaden Higgins, wideout Daniel Jackson and Pierce alumnus to lead a talented tight end room. There will be Ben Brammer.
The running back group is thin due to several players transferring, but the Cyclones return Abu Samah III, who has shown the type of dynamic runner he is.
ISU's defense brings a lot of talent, especially on the back end. If the Cyclones can create pressure up front, they could become a promising unit.
“We're going to have fans in the stands, we're going to play with different combinations of people, we're going to go out and play some basic football,” Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell said. “I'm not really worried about what the outcome of different things will be. I'm looking at the individual matchups of who did well and who was able to work with different people.” That's a day like today. That's what I like about it. ”
“The players around me increase my confidence every day, and that helps me during the season,” Iowa State sophomore quarterback Rocco Becht said. “When I make plays, I don't feel like it gives me confidence. The confidence comes from my teammates and because they believe in me every week.”
Iowa State opens the 2024 season on August 31st at home against North Dakota State. Kickoff date to be determined.
