Jahvon Coles' grandfather and guardian said the North Shore High School senior had a 4.1 GPA and was accepted to 15 colleges. He was going to play football at Lamar.
HUMBLE, Texas โ A North Shore High School football player has died after being found unresponsive after being shot during a party Saturday night.
According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, it happened on Fieldwick Lane near the Forest Shadows community in Humble around 11 p.m.
The case began as a welfare check following a report of underage drinking at a short-term rental property. When officers arrived, they found 50 to 60 people on the premises and called for more units.
Officers said they were told at the scene that a man, now identified by his family as 18-year-old Jahvon Coles, was having a seizure in the backyard of the home and immediately attempted CPR.
While attempting CPR, officers noticed a gunshot wound to Coles' chest.
EMS arrived and transported Coles to an area hospital. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said it appeared the gunman “intentionally fired” in the direction of the house party from about a block away. He said the suspects left the scene in a car.
Braxton Coles, Jahvon's grandfather and guardian, told KHOU 11 News that Jahvon's grandson was a two-time first-team all-district linebacker at North Shore High School.
He said Jarvon had a 4.1 GPA and was accepted to 15 colleges. He also said that Mr. Jarvon had just visited Lamar University and that he was planning to go there to play football.
Braxton said Jarvon was with her Friday night, but then left to “hang out with some friends.” That was the last time Braxton saw his grandson.
Jarvon leaves behind his grandparents and several siblings. Braxton has a message for parents to share with KHOU 11 News.
“Parents, please stand by your children. No matter how hard you try, you can't save them,” Braxton Coles said.
One of Jarvon's teammates, senior Dameco Williams, said he woke up when he heard the news, staring and crying.
“Jervon was a great guy. He always had a smile on his face and never got into a bad situation or had a conflict with anyone in any way,” he said.
Williams said Coles got along well with everyone and always checked in to see how his friends were doing.
“Like I say, he was a great guy on and off the field and a very smart guy,” he said.
Friends now have fond memories of Jarvon off the field as well.
“He was great. I wouldn't trade him for the world. He was a great player,” Williams said.
One of Jervon's coaches I posted a statement on X “His impact on our program on and off the field is immeasurable. He is truly an amazing human being. We need his family, student-athletes, staff and the entire North Shore community in our prayers.” some say.
The sheriff's office said the scene was secured and the partygoers were interviewed by homicide detectives. Investigators are still searching for doorbell cameras and surveillance video of the suspect.
