WASHINGTON (March 7, 2024) – The Howard University volleyball program is proud to announce upcoming overseas trips to Botswana and Zimbabwe, where the team will gain a series of enriching experiences on and off the court.
From May 16th to May 27th, the team will compete in an international tournament and engage in community service activities. The tour is designed to provide student-athletes with a comprehensive educational experience that goes beyond traditional athletics.
The tour will see teams participate in international tournaments, show off their skills and compete against teams from across the African continent. This exposure to competition not only improves athletic performance, but also develops teamwork, sportsmanship, and resilience.
In addition to the tournament, teams will have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on local communities in Botswana and Zimbabwe. The players will visit schools and conduct volleyball camps for students, as well as engage in various community service activities aimed at inspiring and empowering young people through sport.
“Our focus goes beyond the volleyball court,” said Howard Volleyball Head Coach Sean Kupferberg. “This tour is about using the platform of athletics to make a positive difference in the lives of others. We encourage our student-athletes to contribute to their communities and serve as leaders. We want them to understand the importance of what they do.”
Additionally, the tour provides student-athletes with a unique cultural experience that allows them to expand their horizons while deepening their understanding of the world. Exploring Botswana and Zimbabwe's rich heritage and diverse landscapes, the team will visit iconic landmarks such as Victoria Falls, embark on thrilling safaris and create memories that will last a lifetime.
“This trip is a valuable opportunity for student-athletes to expand their horizons,” he said. kelly davis, Director of Athletics, Howard University. “Experiencing new cultures and interacting with communities overseas will develop you into a well-rounded person who will be a leader in your respective career field after graduation.”
The Howard University volleyball program is committed to providing student-athletes with opportunities for personal and academic growth, and the international trips to Botswana and Zimbabwe exemplify this commitment. Through immersion in sport, service and culture, team members emerge from this experience as empowered individuals ready to make a positive impact on the world.
The program aims to raise $100,000 to cover the cost of travel, lodging, meals, tournament participation, and community outreach efforts. By donating to our fundraising efforts, you can directly impact the lives of student-athletes and enable them to embark on this once-in-a-lifetime journey.
