The University of Hawaii men's basketball team has acquired a contract from Marcus “Marmur” Green, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound point guard who played last season at Houston Christian.
Shortly after entering the transfer portal last month, Green heard from Cal head coach Eran Gannot and assistant coach Rob Jones. Green participated in a recruiting trip sponsored by the university and committed to joining the Rainbow Warriors. He plans to register in July, and he still has a season of eligibility left.
“I like the head coach,” Green said. “Ganot seems like a good guy. I think I can learn a lot from him. That's a big plus. …The whole coaching staff has a get-better mentality. They've already built a great program. But I'm not satisfied. That kind of mentality is what I'm looking for.”
Green will help fill the hole in the backcourt. Combo guard Noel Coleman and point guards Jovon McClanahan and Juan Munoz will become NCAA eligible at the end of UH's 2023-24 season.
In his only season with Houston Christian (formerly Houston Baptist), Green averaged 15.1 points (42.7 percent from 3) and 3.6 rebounds. “I'm obviously an outside threat,” Green said. “I take pride in being able to score from anywhere on the court.”
Green grew up in Gilroy, California, but attended Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose. Denver Nuggets' Aaron Gordon is one of the school's basketball alumni. After his freshman year at Sacramento State, Green played one year at Panola College in Carthage, Texas, before transferring to Houston Christian.
The University of California signed guard Aaron Hankin-Creitor in December and acquired former Utah Tech center Tanner Christensen last month.
