HONOLULU — Hawaii's basketball team got the point right when building its roster for next season.
The Rainbow Warriors have secured the acquisition of point guard Marcus “Marmur” Green, who is transferring from Houston Christian. In his only season at the Southland Conference school, the 6-foot-2, 190-pound Green averaged 15.1 points (42.7 percent from 3) and 3.6 rebounds.
“I'm obviously an outside threat,” Green said. “I take pride in being able to score from almost anywhere on the court.”
Green was scouted to fill a hole in the backcourt. Combo guard Noel Coleman and point guards Jovon McClanahan and Juan Munoz will become NCAA eligible at the end of the Bowes' 2023-24 season.
Green has one season of eligibility remaining, and UH will be his fourth college.
Green grew up in Gilroy, California, but attended Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose. Aaron Gordon of the Denver Nuggets also played for the Monarchs.
Green played his freshman season at Sacramento State University. After the Hornets made a coaching change, Green transferred to Panola (Junior) College in Carthage, Texas. He led the Ponies to the regional finals and a No. 10 national ranking.
On transferring to Houston Christian (formerly known as Houston Baptist), Green said: I thought that was the best choice. Houston is a wonderful city. A great opportunity. ”
Green started 28 games for the Huskies, going 6-23 overall. His average time was 32.5 minutes. Following another coaching change, Green entered the portal last month. Shortly thereafter, he received a call from UC head coach Eran Ganot and assistant coach Rob Jones. He took part in a university-sponsored recruiting trip and then committed to the 'Bows.
“I like the head coach,” Green said. “Ganot seems like a good guy. I think I can learn a lot from him. That's a big plus. …The whole coaching staff has a get-better mentality. They've already built a great program. But I'm not satisfied. That kind of mentality is what I'm looking for.”
Green said he started playing basketball when he was 2 years old. When she was six years old, she learned basketball skills at an after-school program at Morgan Hill Recreation Center. He said he became “serious” about the sport in middle school. And now, he said, universities offer “opportunities to play in high-level games against high-level teams.”
The University of California signed guard Aaron Hankin-Creitor in December and acquired former Utah Tech center Tanner Christensen last month.
