The Georgia basketball team has received a commitment from former Mount St. Mary's guard Deshane Montgomery. He spent one season with the Mountaineers as a freshman. He chose the Bulldogs over Ole Miss, Mississippi State and USC.
The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native was named MAAC Rookie of the Year after a stellar freshman season in college basketball. Prior to attending Mount St. Mary's, Montgomery attended graduate school at Hargrove Military Academy and did not begin playing basketball until high school.
Last season with the Mountaineers, Montgomery averaged 13.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists while shooting 53.8 percent from the field. He also has past experience at the University of Georgia, scoring 23 points, three assists and shooting 62.5 percent from the field last season against the Bulldogs at his former program. Montgomery can also be a knockdown shooter from behind the arc, as he had a 41.2 3-point percentage last season.
With several years of eligibility remaining, head coach Mike White has added yet another surefire player to his roster as he begins preparations for the 2024 basketball season.Bulldogs are also available 5-star Asa Newell in the 2024 recruiting classwill be the immediate centerpiece of the Hoop Dawgs.
White plucked some great players from the transfer portal, and that proved to be the case during the 2023-2024 season.Russell Chewa, Noah Thomason, RJ Melendez, and Jalen DeLoach were all transfers brought in by Coach White, and all had a huge impact on the season.. Montgomery certainly seems to fit the mold of a transfer player who can be expected to perform similarly next season.
