Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir, who is also a member of parliament for the country's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), wants to take some time off from politics to shift his “focus” to cricket, Hindustan reported.・The Times reported.
The former Indian captain has been active in Indian politics since 2019 and currently represents East Delhi constituency in the Lok Sabha.
However, Gambhir has now requested the party's national president JP Nadda to relieve him of political duties to focus on his cricketing endeavors.
It is unclear whether Gambhir plans to quit politics.
Sharing an update on X, he said, “I have requested party president JP Nadda ji to relieve me from political duties so that I can focus on my future cricketing activities. My heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji.” I wrote. Your Highness Amit Shahji, please allow me to serve the people. Jai Hind! ”
There is speculation that the Bharatiya Janata Party may replace some of Delhi's seven sitting MPs with new members ahead of the next general election.
In the 2019 Indian Parliament polls, the Bharatiya Janata Party replaced two sitting MPs from north-west and east Delhi.
Gambhir joined the BJP before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and contested from the East Delhi Assembly seat, winning with over 55% of the votes. He defeated his closest rival, Congress candidate Arvinder Singh Lovely.
