On Saturday night, Jerry Deng announced his transfer to the Seminoles, making Leonard Hamilton and Florida State the first transfers of the offseason. Deng is a 6-foot-9, 220-pound forward who spent his freshman season at Hampton, averaging 10.1 PPG, 4.2 RPG and shooting 39.1 percent from 3-point range.
This is a typical Leonard Hamilton type forward. Long, long and athletic, he can space the floor with his shot. Although he didn't have his best defensive season last year, he has all the tools to be an elite defensive presence. He committed to the Seminoles after visiting them this weekend, choosing FSU over New Mexico State, which he recently visited.
Deng said in an interview with 247sports, “I have great chemistry with Coach Hamilton and that connection was important to me…My main goal is to win the ACC Championship and make March Madness happen. If you can do that, everything else will take care of itself.”
Florida State's roster has been decimated by attrition so far this offseason, losing six scholarship players to the transfer portal and several others ineligible. Only Chandler Jackson, Camron Fletcher, Taylor Bol Bowen and Jameel Watkins have not announced whether they will return.
Jerry Deng is FSU's first transfer this offseason, but they have also signed AJ Swinton, Christian Nitu and Daquan Davis, as well as at least three high school prospects. They could add at least one more high school prospect, but the focus from here should be on adding an experienced transfer who knows how to win.
