Framingham High School has hired a well-known figure in the city to lead the school's boys hockey program, naming former Marian coach Adam Aguilar to replace Dan Riva, who retired in April after three seasons.
Aguilar coached at the now-closed Marian High School for 10 years and most recently served as vice president of Framingham Youth Hockey.
“Adam has always been a very positive guy and really studies the game of baseball,” Framingham athletic director and former coach Paul Speer said. “He knows a lot of our current players and the players are excited to have him as a coach, so we're fortunate.”
Aguilar, who lives in Ashland with his wife, Erica, son Cam and daughter Madison, is the Flyers' third head coach since Spear retired in 2016. Spear's successor was Will Ortiz, who served as coach through 2021.
Riva, a 1993 graduate of FHS, led his team to a 9-11-1 record last season, but the Flyers lost to fourth-seeded Xaverian in the round of 32 of MIAA Division 1. Framingham won the Ed Cahoon Memorial Cup tournament at the Ice Palace in February.

Aguilar, who grew up in Framingham, was an assistant at Marian from 2002-2007 before taking over as head coach in 2012. He has been the Framingham youth hockey coach since 2016, and many of the current Flyers players played under him.

“I know the history here and having the opportunity to coach this team at Loring Arena is a real pleasure and something I'm really looking forward to,” Aguilar said.
“Adam has built great relationships with his players and he builds them in a positive way. He develops their character so they become better people,” Speer added.
