BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA – Argentina's top soccer club Velez Sarsfield suspended four players on Thursday after a woman accused them of rape last week.
Vélez announced that they had suspended goalkeeper Sebastian Sosa, defender Brian Coufre, midfielder Jose Ignacio Florentin and striker Abiel Osorio after learning that prosecutors had opened an investigation. .
The sexual abuse accusation was filed in Tucuman, a city 1,200 kilometers (745 miles) north of Buenos Aires, where Velez played Saturday's match against Atlético Tucuman.
Local media reported that the alleged victim told authorities that she had agreed to join one of the players in a hotel room, but that three other men were also there. .
The woman was allegedly raped after drinking with the players and falling asleep on one of the beds.
None of the four players or their representatives have commented on the investigation.
Velez, the historic Argentine club that has won 10 domestic titles and the 1994 Copa Libertadores trophy, said it would “provide all information and all relevant details to assist the investigation”.
