Bemidji, Minnesota – The Central University Hockey Association announced its all-conference selections Monday afternoon, with four Bemidji State University men's hockey student-athletes recognized as all-league players for the 2023-24 season.
Kyle Loft, Eric Pohlkamp, Leighton Rod and Matthias Scholl were each named to the All-CCHA First Team, and Peaukamp was also named to the All-CCHA Rookie Team. The Beavers have four members earn All-Conference First Team honors for the first time in Division I history, beating a program record three All-CHA First Team selections (Dan Bakala, Brad Hunt and Matt Reed) in 2010. did.
Despite appearing in just 20 games, Loft said the Beavers captain led all CCHA skaters with a league plus-minus of 16 and paced conference blueliners in assists (14) and points (18). Earned his first all-conference selection. He scored four goals, including one on the power play, and was fifth among all skaters in multi-point games and first among defensemen (5 points). He blocked 28 shots at defensive end and was recognized as a CCHA Scholar-Athlete and All-Academic team. The Mankato, Minn., native was named CCHA Defenseman of the Week for his four hits on the season and twice won CCHA Defenseman of the Month.
Activities of new students Eric Pohlkamp In his first season in the CCHA, he led all CCHA Blueliners with six goals and 68 shots, was third in the league in points with 16, and earned First Team and Rookie Team honors. He won two of those games and scored five points (three goals, two assists) on the man advantage. He played in 20 of 24 league games, scored at least one point in every conference series he played in, and finished with a plus-minus of +8. He helped the Beavers win their second McNaughton Cup and their first regular season championship since 2017. The Brainerd, Minn., native is a finalist for the league's Rookie of the Year award.
Lord finished his sophomore season fourth in CCHA points (21) with 10 goals and 11 assists in 24 games for the Beavers. He posted a plus-minus of +3, and three of his records came on the power play, one shorthanded and two game-winners. He was second in the league in multi-point games (7 games) with 61 shots on goal and 18 defensive blocks. On December 15, he had one goal and two assists in a 5–2 win against Bowling Green. He was once nominated for the CCHA Forward of the Week and the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, and helped the Beavers reach the Mason Cup semifinals.
junior netminder Matthias Scholl In 14 league games, the Beavers had a 10-2-2 record with a save percentage of .924, and led the conference's netminders in goals against (2.03) and winning percentage (.786). He recorded one shutout in conference play and made 342 saves, including a season-high 46 saves in a 2-2 tie with Michigan Tech. He allowed two or fewer goals in 11 of 14 starts and made 25 or more saves in seven league games. The Hermosa Beach, Calif., native was twice named CCHA Goaltender of the Week this year.
Voting for all 2023-24 CCHA teams and year-end awards was conducted by eight head coaches from each CCHA member institution based solely on CCHA conference games. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their players.
Announcements of the league's year-end awards continue tomorrow, including Defenseman of the Year (10 a.m. ET), Goaltender of the Year (12 p.m. ET), and Player of the Year (2 p.m. ET). Finalists will be announced.
The 2024 Mason Cup Playoffs resume this Saturday in a win-or-home conference semifinal as No. 1 seed Bemidji State takes on No. 7 seed Lake at the Sanford Center (7:07 p.m. CT). against Superior State University.
