On Sunday, video surfaced that appears to show 2015 NFL Most Valuable Player Cam Newton getting into a scuffle at a 7-on-7 youth football tournament in Atlanta.
The video shows Newton, wearing a custom hat, being shoved by three people near the top of a set of steps before being pushed, shoved and grabbed towards the fence line. This video is less than 30 seconds long at WeBall Sports xdynastyU's 7-on-7 tournament held at BEST Academy before an altercation is broken up by police and event security.
Newton, the No. 1 overall pick out of Auburn University in 2011, doesn't appear to throw any punches in the video and appears to be fending off three other players. One punch was thrown in Newton's direction, but it's unclear whether that punch hit his former quarterback.
It is unclear what sparked the altercation.
Newton, an Atlanta native, runs C1N, an organization founded in 2021 that provides opportunities to compete at the highest level through 7-on-7 tournaments and other events, according to Newton's website. The focus is on improving the soccer skills of young athletes. . The organization's mission is to help young athletes achieve their soccer and life goals by creating an environment that fosters growth and development on and off the field, according to the website.
C1N plays in tournaments across the country.
Newton's under-15 team won the competition.
Attempts to contact Newton's representatives Sunday night were unsuccessful.
Newton has not played in the NFL since 2021, when he spent part of the season with the Carolina Panthers, the same team that drafted him.
Newton spent 11 seasons in the NFL, throwing for more than 32,000 yards and 194 touchdowns. He scored 75 TDs with the Panthers and New England Patriots.
